How much is too much?

There is no safe drinking level – but the effects of alcohol on your health depend on how much you drink. Quite simply, the less you drink, the lower the health risks.

To stay at low risk, adults are advised to not regularly drink beyond 14 units a week. If you regularly drink up to this amount, you should make sure you spread your drinking over 3 or more days.

The number of units in a drink is based on the size of the drink and its strength. 14 units is equivalent to 7 pints of average strength beer (4%) or 7 medium-sized (175ml) glasses of average strength wine (12%). That’s less than many people think.

Alcohol and pregnancy

Whether you’re already pregnant or just starting planning, it’s important to stop drinking. Alcohol at any stage can reduce your chances of getting pregnant, and put your baby at risk.
