The truth about smoking and mental health

Most people are aware of the harm smoking causes to physical health – but fewer realise that smoking can also negatively impact mental health. Many smokers feel that smoking helps them deal with stress and anxiety and therefore supports their mental wellbeing. But smoking actually increases feelings of stress and anxiety, and can worsen good mental health.

Quitting and your mental health

Anxiety, depression and stress levels are lowered by quitting smoking

After you quit, your quality of life and positivity improves

Some medications used to treat mental health problems can be reduced if you quit smoking

Smoking and depression

If you suffer from depression, you might find it more difficult to quit smoking. But support is there to help you quit.

This is because levels of dopamine (the chemical that makes you feel happy) are often found to be very low in people with depression, who may then use cigarettes as a way of temporarily increasing their dopamine supply. However, smoking encourages the brain to switch off its own mechanism for making dopamine so in the long term the supply decreases, which in turn prompts people to smoke more.

The only way to escape this vicious cycle is the quit smoking altogether. If you are being treated for depression, ask your doctor about the support available to you to help you quit, or find support near you through a stop smoking service or pharmacy.
